01 What "subject" means on a Certificate of Analysis
On a Certificate of Analysis, the subject is the identification block: the exact compound name, the amino acid sequence where one applies, and the lot or batch number the laboratory recorded when it received the sample. It sits near the top of the document, before the analytical results, and it answers a single question — what, precisely, was tested. Every figure that follows, the HPLC purity reading, the LC-MS mass, the water content, is a statement about that one subject and nothing else.
This is a narrower idea than "what the certificate is about" in a general sense. A COA can be about peptide purity in a broad topical sense while still failing to identify its subject with enough precision to be useful. A document that reports "98% pure" without naming a lot number has a topic but no verifiable subject. The two are not interchangeable, and the distinction is exactly where a great deal of confusion about certificates originates.
02 The three identifiers that make up a subject block
A properly written subject block contains three separate identifiers, each doing a different job.
Compound name and sequence
The compound name states which substance was analyzed. For synthetic peptides, a complete subject block also states the sequence, or references a sequence on file, because two products can share a common name while differing in a single residue. Naming the compound without confirming the sequence leaves room for a subtle but consequential mismatch.
Lot or batch number
The lot number is the identifier that narrows the subject from "this compound in general" to "this specific production run, tested on this specific date." It is the single most load-bearing field in the entire document. Two containers can hold the same compound at different purities simply because they come from different synthesis runs; the lot number is what tells you which run the certificate describes.
Submitting party and sample receipt date
A complete subject block also records who submitted the sample and when the laboratory received it. This establishes the chain of custody: the interval between submission and the reported test date should be short and plausible, and the submitting party should be identifiable rather than anonymous.
Laboratories do not use uniform terminology. The identification block may be labeled "Subject," "Test Article," "Item Description," "Product," or "Reference" depending on the laboratory's own template. The label varies; the function does not. Whatever heading it sits under, this block is what you check first.
03 Why a mismatched subject invalidates the whole document
A laboratory can only make claims about the material it physically received and tested. Its equipment, its analysts, and its chain-of-custody records all apply to one sample, submitted on one date, under one lot number. The certificate that results from that process is a record of that transaction — not a general statement about the compound as a category.
This is why a subject mismatch is disqualifying rather than merely a paperwork inconvenience. If the lot number on a certificate does not match the lot number on the product in front of you, the laboratory's purity and identity findings are true statements about a different, unrelated sample. They say nothing — favorable or unfavorable — about the batch you actually hold. A seller who presents a certificate with an unrelated or absent lot number is not offering weaker evidence; they are offering no evidence about that specific product at all.
This also explains why certificate reuse is a recognized problem in the review of analytical documents generally, not only in the peptide space. A single, genuine certificate produced for one production run can be attached, unchanged, to every subsequent batch a seller offers, regardless of whether later batches were ever tested. The certificate is authentic; its application to a new subject is not.

05 How to check a subject block in under a minute

Find the lot number on the physical product Most labeled research materials print a lot or batch code on the container or accompanying label. Locate it before opening the certificate.

Open the certificate and locate the subject block Look near the top of the document, under whichever heading the laboratory uses — Subject, Test Article, Item, or Product.

Compare the lot numbers character by character A one-character difference is a different lot. Do not treat a partial match as a match.

Confirm the compound name and, where stated, the sequence Check that the name on the certificate matches the name on the label exactly, and that any stated sequence corresponds to the compound claimed.

06 What a subject block does not tell you
A correctly identified subject block confirms that the certificate applies to the material in question. It does not, on its own, confirm that the issuing laboratory was independent or accredited, and it does not speak to the regulatory status of the substance itself. Those are separate questions, each requiring its own check.
Research peptides are, in most jurisdictions, not authorized as finished medicinal products and are distributed under research-use frameworks rather than pharmaceutical marketing authorizations. A correctly matched subject block does not change that status, confer any authorization, or indicate suitability for any particular use. It establishes only that a specific analytical record refers to a specific physical sample.
